Our Journey on the El Camino de Santiago

The El Camino de Santiago, or The Way of St. James, is one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in the world, drawing thousands of travelers each year. This network of trails, which stretches across Spain and beyond, leads to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of St. James, one of Jesus’ apostles, are said to be buried. For over a thousand years, pilgrims from all walks of life have followed these sacred paths, seeking spiritual growth, adventure, or simply the joy of walking through breathtaking landscapes.

The Camino has its roots in the early 9th century when the tomb of St. James was reportedly discovered in Galicia, Spain. Recognized as a holy site by the Catholic Church, it quickly became a major pilgrimage destination, rivaling Rome and Jerusalem. By the Middle Ages, a vast network of trails had formed across Europe, all converging toward Santiago. Though its religious significance remains, the Camino has evolved into something more than just a spiritual journey. Today, hikers and pilgrims from all backgrounds take to the trail for personal reflection, cultural exploration, or the challenge of walking hundreds of miles through diverse terrain.

For our journey, Angela and I have chosen to walk the Camino Portugués, beginning our adventure in Porto, Portugal. This historic city, with its charming riverside views and world-famous port wine, will be our staging point before we set off on foot toward Santiago. We’re especially drawn to the mix of coastal and inland paths, offering a chance to walk along the Atlantic Ocean while also passing through historic towns and lush countryside. Whether we take the Central Route or opt for the Coastal Route, we know this will be a journey filled with incredible landscapes, warm hospitality, and plenty of delicious food along the way. More than anything, we’re excited for the personal reflections, challenges, and unforgettable moments that await us on the road to Santiago.
