Day 7: Coastin’ into Vigo: 103 Miles Down, 62 to Go

Today was a key milestone for us. From Baiona to Vigo, it was our 7th day of hiking without any breaks. Tomorrow is a day off to recover, rest and recharge—a welcome break.

Since we started, we have hiked 103.4 miles in 36.9 hours. After our break tomorrow, we’ll hit the trail for 5 more days for the final 62 miles.

Leaving Baiona

This morning was another long day—like the previous day—so we got an early start.

Today’s path took us through cities and small villages, while hugging the coastline. We never ventured out into any wilderness for the entire hike.

Coastal Route or “Litoral” Route

When hiking the Portuguese El Camino, you have a couple of route options:

  • The Coastal Route: This route is the older more traditional route. It weaves through cities and villages. This way was a bit shorter but had more hills and elevation. So, we took…
  • The Litoral (Shoreline) Route: This slightly longer route carried us much closer to the shoreline. It was less hilly but also quite peaceful to stay along the coastline.

A rock walking bridge brought us to the “fork in the road” — Coastal or Litoral? We choose Litoral.

Here’s a map showing where the two route diverge.

The green dotted line was the route we took.

And, we were no longer looking for yellow arrows. Now, we were looking for green arrows.

Miles and Miles of Coastline

Once we made the decision to hug the coast, it was miles and miles of coastline all the way to Vigo. We even spent some time walking on the beach.

Finishing in Vigo

After hiking along the coastline, we finally made it Vigo, where we will rest for a couple days.
