Day 3: Hills, History, and Hiking Poles to the Rescue

Today’s stage of the hike was quite challenging and much different than the others. Lots a different terrains and lots of time hiking through small villages.

We started out hike along the coast.

Start of the hike

After a couple of hours, we headed inland.

Churches and Chapels

Along the path today, we saw quite a few small little churches and chapels as we worked our way in and around these small coastal towns.

We stopped at a church where I was able to sit quietly and enjoy the serenity of the moment. (I cannot lie. I was hurting and needed a break.)

Moving into the trails

We also had a chance to get into some real rocky trail conditions. Glad we brought our hiking poles!

Saint Tiago (Santiago)

And, we got a picture with Santiago!

Crossing the River

We had the chance to walk along a river and then cross over a stone bridge. The sound of the water was so relaxing!

Years and Years of History

Traveling through these old towns gave us many opportunities to see old buildings, roads and lots of Camino milestones.

The Hill

Right toward the end of our hike, we climbed a very tall hill and then stopped for a much needed break.

Smiles of pain

Downhill into Town

Once we started working our way down, Viana do Castelo came into view. And it was stunning!

Dinner Time

After hiking all day, we are starving and ready for dinner!
